The community in Bukonzo County East, Kasese district has been encouraged to embrace the culture of reporting cases of Gender Based Violence in their respective areas to the relevant authorities.
The encouragement was sounded last evening by His Worship, John Ssemukuju, a Grade I Magistrate attached to Rukoki while addressing the community members during a Community Baraza organized by Justice Centres Uganda at Kyondo Sub-county headquarters.
The Community Baraza was aimed at sensitizing the members of the public about the need to jointly fight against cases of Gender Based Violence.
His Worship Ssemukuju observed that many victims of Gender Based Violence were suffering from the community even when government had established police stations with the Child and Family Protection Unit Departments purposely to address such challenges in the communities.
ASP Julius Twesigye, the Officer in-charge of Kisinga Police Station who also oversees the operations of police posts in Kisinga, Kyondo, and Kyarumba Sub-counties warned the Local Council I Chairpersons against the practice of handling cases related to Gender Based Violence which according to him, are beyond their mandate.
Mr. Twesigye speaking: ……… Some of the Local Council I Chairpersons including George Kule Isepulani from Kasemire village and Mr. Joseph Kanyoho from Kasithu village suggested to the judiciary to be giving punishments that would see the community members changed from doing actions that fuel domestic violence.
