The Traditional Leader of the Basongora in Kasese has suggested to the government to also involve the cultural leaders in resolving land wrangles across the district.
Mr. Dan Ndahura II Kasagama sounded the remarks today afternoon while addressing the press at his home in Kihara road cell, Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality.
Kasagama’s remarks were following an incident where about 3,000 people have camped at the RDC’s office in Kasese town to protest against the alleged delay by government to resolve issues surrounding their disputed pieces of land.
The pieces of land in question are located in Kitswamba, Karusandara, Muhokya, and Nyakiyumbu sub-counties among other areas.
Kasagama explained that the issues of land conflicts cannot be addressed unless the cultural leaders are involved to guide the process.
According to him, cultural and clan leaders are aware of the histories behind the acquisition of the disputed pieces of land and can therefore give the necessary guidance.
He also alleged that the decision by the people to camp at the RDC’s office was as a result of mobilization by some political players who according to him have failed to explain to them the right procedures of resolving such issues.
He called on the government to sensitize the people about the right procedures of acquiring land in order to avoid chaos.
