A section of lower local governments in Kasese in dire to benefit from the Sub-county Policing Model as directed by the President

BY MATHIUS KAHUNGU

A section of lower local governments in Kasese district is still waiting to benefit from the Sub-county policing model as directed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Last year, President Museveni directed the leadership of Uganda Police Force to establish police posts and stations at sub-county headquarters with at least 18 officers and four motorcycles as one way of strengthening security and responding to emergencies.

On January 29, 2025, the Inspector General of Police, Abbas Byakagaba launched the initiative with an aim of decentralizing the policing services to the local population.

However, in Kasese district, some sub-counties have remained without police posts and stations as per the directive.

SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson says out of 44 lower local governments in Kasese district, 14 have so far benefited from the Presidential directive while others have remained without due to the accommodation challenges.

He appealed to the local governments to work around the clock and put in place structures that can accommodate the police officers deployed to man security in their respective areas.

Recently, Mr. Abel Bwambale Liminya, the Ihandiro Sub-county Chairperson disclosed that his area of jurisdiction was witnessed increased cases of Gender Based Violence attributing the vice to lack of a police post and insufficient community policing in the lower local government.
