Muhokya District Councilor elect urges people to embrace gov’t programs

BY YONAH MATSITSI

The District Councilor-elect for Muhokya Sub-county in Kasese District has urged the residents to embrace the government programs, especially tree planting.

Emmy Bakengana says trees are most important investments that the communities can invest in during the rainy season.

He says trees play a vital role in improving the livelihoods of the people through attracting rainfall, providing firewood, generating income and enhancing the beauty of the communities.

Bakengana encourages every household to take advantage of the current rains to plant trees around homes, farms, schools and public places.

Speaking to our reporter, Bakengana cautions the parents against rushing to take their children to schools outside the district, arguing that the local government now has many quality schools capable of providing good education.

He observes that some parents are often influenced by seasonal earnings from coffee, cocoa and vanilla harvests that make them feel they are financially secure to send their children to expensive schools outside the district.

To his dismay, many of the parents later fail to sustain the costs in the subsequent terms, forcing the students to drop out of schools.

He suggests to the parents to always make realistic decisions based on the long-term affordability instead of the temporary seasonal income.
