Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious and devastating viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, characterized by fever, blisters and on the mouth, tongue, and hooves.
Kasese District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Yusuf Kibaya explains that the delivery of the vaccines is part of government efforts to minimize the spread of the viral disease among livestock.
Dr. Kibaya, however, says that farmers will have to incur a cost of 8,000shs for each cow to receive the vaccine while each goat, sheep and or a pig will be charged shs 4000 for the same vaccine.
He calls on all the farmers to ensure all their animals are vaccinated in order to forestall the spread of the contagious disease which has potential to cause significant losses.
