Schools situated in the farming dominated areas are grappling with increased the challenge of absenteeism of learners and poor learning conditions as the planting season intensifies.
A case in point is Kirembe Primary School in Kirembe Ward of the Central Division in Kasese Municipality.
The authorities say more than 100 pupils can be absent on a single day as they assist their parents to do garden work.
The School’s Head teacher, Ms. Razia Pokopoko says the trend is affecting the academic performance of learners as many of them miss the lessons and struggle to catch up when they return.
She adds that even the few who attend classes face difficult learning conditions, including congestion in classrooms and dusty environments, which compromise hygiene and the overall learning atmosphere.
