Parents blamed for fueling school dropouts in Kasese

Parents in Kasese District have been largely blamed for the overwhelming number of school dropouts, a matter that has increased a population of illiterate youth with related challenges.

The blame was sounded yesterday at Kuruhe High School located in Kitswamba Town Council, Busongora County North in Kasese district during the school’s club convention that was facilitated by Enabel with an aim of understanding the root causes of the challenge and devise appropriate solutions.

The engagement attracted parents, learners from various schools, political and religious leaders among other deligates.

Speaking on behalf of the parents, William , blamed his fellows for not following up and supporting teachersduring the process of teaching their children, citing out domestic violence and disunity within the families as the major causes.

Chrispus Mumbere, a learner at Kuruhe High School, disclosed that even though they also stand blamed for the increased rate of school drop because of the engagement in bad peer groups and their alleged failure to concentrate in class, the parents should too be blamed for neglecting their roles of counselling and guiding them. 

Faisal Bagumira Kiralira, the Kasese District Probation and Senior Welfare Officer, tipped the parents about the 72 – hour rule which guarantees children involved in sex scandals a chance to avoid contracting diseases or getting impregnated  as  a way of maintaining them in schools.

However, Habert Kato, the Kasese District Senior Education Officer, who represented the District Education Officer, reminded the parents of their role towards ensuring the security of their children to prevent them from being impregnated.

Lt. Maate Magwara, the acting Kasese Resident District Commissioner, discouraged the parents from the habit of fragmenting their pieces of land and giving portions to their children, encouraging them to venture in educating them.
