Kasese is still grappling with a challenge of a smaller size of land amidst the growing population of people across the district.
Located in Western Uganda, Kasese currently consists of 27 Sub-counties, 14 Town Councils and one Municipality with three divisions spread across a total land size of 3,389.8 Square Kilometers including dry land equivalent to 2,911.3 square kilometers (86%), open water totaling to 409.7 square kilometers, Permanent swamp/wetland equivalent 68.8 square kilometers (2%), nature and wildlife conservation totaling to 1,834.6 square kilometers (63%).
Mr. Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi, the District Chairperson, says the population density of the residents, increases by 2.45% annually, making an average of 160,000 new people amidst the small land size.
This, according to him forces the people to compete for the smaller sized piece of land.
The District Boss argues that such a population increase results into land fragmentation, soil infertility, resource wastage and conflicts as people struggle to utilize the resources.
Mr. Muhindi who says the district’s vision is to achieve sustainable socio-economic development through the efficient provision of quality services to the residents in conformity with both the national and local priorities, suggests to the people to minimize the practice of dividing land into smaller pieces.
