Kasese District has received 10,000 doses of vaccines that will be administered to prevent Foot and Mouth disease among domestic animals across the district.

Foot and Mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals like cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. Its symptoms include fever, blisters on the feet and in the mouth, and excess saliva.

However, Foot and Mouth disease is not a threat to human health or food safety.

Dr. Yusuf Kibaya, the Kasese District Veterinary Officer, says the disease needs to be fought because it has greatly hampered the exportation of cattle to other countries.

Dr. Kibaya stresses that the vaccines which are already in stock will be given to the farmers freely on the dates that will soon be communicated.

He says they are targeting to vaccinate over 26,000 cows, 240,000 goats and 30,000 pigs in the entire district.

The Veterinary Officer also told Messiah Radio today morning that other 3,000 doses of rabies are in stock, awaiting consumers.

Rabies disease is transmitted to human beings through dogs and cats.
