Poultry keeping in Kasese district is currently being threatened by fowl pox disease.
Fowl pox which is also known as avian pox, is a viral disease that affects chickens and turkeys and hinders egg production among the birds.
The disease appears on the head, face, and wattle of the domestic birds. These growths can develop into yellow pimples that may eventually form crusts that fall off after about a week.
Dr. Yusuf Kibaya, the Kasese District Veterinary Officer has confirmed the prevalence of the disease in most parts of the district.
He encourages the farmers to vaccinate their chicken as one way of curtailing its spread to other places.
However, Dr. Kibaya notes that the disease is not harmful to the lives of human beings.
According to him, the total number of domestic birds especially chicken in Kasese district is estimated at 300,000.
The Kasese District Chairperson, Mr. Eliphazi Muhindi Bukombi is happy that government is funding the construction of a Veterinary Laboratory in the district from where some samples of the diseases that attack animals would be taken for possible remedies.
