UWA gives out water tanks to the communities surrounding Queen Elizabeth National Park

Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has launched a programme of supplying water harvesting tanks to the communities surrounding the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area.

The 40 water tanks will be given to some identified water stressed communities in Kasese and other neighbouring districts so that they are helped to harvest rain water for domestic use.

Mr. Pontius Ezuma, the Chief Warden for the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area told the press today afternoon shortly after delivering a 10,000 liter water tank to the community of Nyakatonzi sub-county that the initiative was reached after realizing that most people surrounding the protected area share water with animals, an act that puts their lives at risk of contracting diseases.

The tank which was installed today is meant to benefit the community of Kamuruli Parish.

According to him, with support from the World Bank, other areas have also been identified to benefit from the same project that targets communities surrounding both Queen Elizabeth National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Rev. Christopher Ajuna, the Vicar at Nyakatonzi Church of Uganda Parish was among the excited persons who witnessed the installation of the water harvesting tank.

The Man of God, however, appealed to the government to devise other new technological systems that would see some water stressed areas access safe and clean drinking water.

Ms Peace Birungi, the Chairperson for Kamuruli Mixed Farmers’ Association commended UWA for its continued support to the community driven projects.

According to her, in addition to the water harvesting tank, UWA also gave them protective gears for honey harvesting.

Other members appreciated the cordial relationship between UWA and the community, saying it helps them to appreciate the importance of living near the protected areas.
