BY JOACKIM KULE

Kasese District Local Government is currently being threatened by an overwhelming number of primary school teachers who are seeking early retirement.

The district has 234 primary schools with over 2,000 teachers on government payroll.

Mr. Ernest Bwambale Thabugha, the Kasese District Principal Education Officer made the revelation last evening while addressing a section of Head teachers who had thronged the district multipurpose hall in Nyamwamba Division of Kasese Municipality to receive the results of the 2024 Primary Leaving Mock Examinations.

But at the function, Mr. Thabugha in his remarks indicated that the department continues receiving applications from teachers seeking early retirement from the public service.

He noted that since January to date, his office has so far received applications from more than 75 teachers who have since been granted early retirement from service.

Mr. William Muserero, the Chairperson for the Primary School Head Teachers’ Association told the gathering that he was worried that the retirement of teachers might cause an acute crisis in the department.

Mr. Joseph Nzukwa, the Rwenzori Regional Chairperson for the Association of Secondary School Head teachers of Uganda (ASSHU), explained that he was concerned about the manner in which some people especially the learners were not motivated to join the primary teaching profession.

However, the Kasese District Vice Chairperson who is also the Secretary for Social Services, Girivazio Monday Bwambale, said they had submitted their request to government to consider motivating the teachers posted in the hard to reach areas.
