The police in the Rwenzori East Policing Region, Kasese district have arrested 20 suspected mad people who have been loitering in Kasese town.
ASP Nelson Tumushime, the Regional Police Spokesperson told Messiah Radio on Thursday afternoon at Kasese Central Police Station that they decided to mount an operation against suspected mad people following a public outcry that their number had increased hence posing a security threat.
According to him, after their arrest, police immediately carried out a screening exercise and discovered that 15 of the suspected were mad while the remaining 05 were normal but pretending to be mad.
Subsequently, Tumushime disclosed that the 15 people who were proved to be mad would be taken to Butabika Hospital in Kampala for treatment as the 05 who were pretending to be mad would be produced in the courts of law to answer charges preferred against them.
The Police Mouthpiece also noted that related operations would continue in all the four police divisions that form the Rwenzori East. They include Kasese, Bwera, Hima and Katwe.
Earlier, some of the vendors in Kisanga B Market commonly known as Mawa Market had complained of allegedly being attacked by suspected mad people and in the process run away with their items.
