The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has donated a 10,000 litre water harvesting tank to the residents of Railway Ward in Kasese Municipality as part of its campaign aimed at curtailing the people from encroaching on the Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The donation follows several other projects that UWA has been funding as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
While handing over the tank to the residents on Wednesday evening, Mr. Mike Birungi, the Assistant Human Wildlife Conflict Officer told them to properly utilize the projects that UWA has been able to establish in the area.
He observed the need for them to make a follow-up on how to access the 20% of the revenue sharing from the park that is sent to the sub-counties and divisions neighbouring the protected and gazetted areas in an attempt to obtain start-up capital for their businesses.
Hon. Jimmy Bwambale Kamusitho, the Central Division Councilor representing Kikonzo Electoral Area in the Railway Ward and Esther Njike Bwambale, the Kikonzo L.C I Vice Chairperson applauded UWA for the continuous support rendered to the people in the area, adding that the donated tank would help the residents to store rainy water for use during the dry spells.
The residents under their umbrella organization dubbed “Railway Resource Users” said the donation would not only save them from the burden of water shortage during the dry spells but also help them to realize income through selling water to other people at a subsidized cost.
