The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) in Kasese District want government to resolve land wrangles that have persisted in the district so that the people can live in harmony and concentrate on development.
Their concern arises following the conflicts that the inhabitants of Nkoko in Kitswamba sub -county and Kabukero in Karusandara sub-county have battled for years.
Col. Saulo Nabimanya, the 222 Mountain Brigade Commander who was addressing the State Minister of ICT and National Guidance during the Tarehe Sita belated celebrations at Mpondwe Moslem Primary School, Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council yesterday, indicated that the land wrangles that have remained unresolved have potential to cause insecurity in the district.
Col. Nabimanya appealed to the residents to embrace a peaceful co-existence so that they foster peace and security that government emphasizes.
Minister Godffrey Baluku Kabbyanga Kiime, in his response warned the locals against thinking of obtaining land out of violent actions.
However, he revealed to the people that they were handling the matter at cabinet level, noting that they have arranged for a meeting with the line minster which is likely to take place on Wednesday this week.
In a related development, Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson has confirmed the arrest of twenty people following a land dispute in Kabukero village of Karusandara sub-county.
SP Nelson Tumushime revealed that the twenty who are currently detained at Hima Divisional Police have been charged with inciting violence.
According to Tumushime, the suspects were found in possession of pangas, hoes, and sticks after they attempted to reclaim sections of the land which is under contention between the cattle keepers and the cultivators.
He explains that the Hima Divisional Police Commander Susan Nerima Bwire swung in action to contain the situation that could have otherwise exploded into a full scale conflict between the cattle keepers and the cultivators.
The police mouth piece added that the suspects will likely be arraigned in court tomorrow to face the charges.
