Two critically injured by a hippo in Kasese

Two people in Kasese District have been critically injured by a hippo that escaped from the Queen Elizabeth National Park into the community especially in the areas of Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality.

The two have been identified as John Owe, 56 years and Junior Bwambale, 17 years.

Speaking to Radio Messiah on his sick bed, Owe admitted at Canopus Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals Uganda limited recounted his fate saying that the hippo found him yesterday at around 1pmon his way back from the garden.

He added that his family now hangs at stake of starvation among other sufferings since he is the only breadwinner adding that Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has not yet shown any signs of helping him out.

Lucia Kapamba is a mother to the 17- year- old Bwambale who was today injured by the same hippo on the stomach to the extent of his internal organs showing up and is current admitted at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital.

She demanded UWA to be ready to meet all the hospital bills regardless of all the necessary medications that will be accorded to her child in a bid to save his life.

Some of the UWA staff who visited the scene of crime, killed the hippo and went away with its meat, said that soon their top officials would give a comment about the matter.

However, police in Kasese District through SP Nelson Tumushime, the Rwenzori East RegionalPolice Spokesperson appealed to the residents neighbouring the National Park to always distance themselves from wild animals once they come into the community.
