Traders in Mpondwe register improved livelihoods following the relocation of a fish market to the Ugandan side

Traders at the border market of Mpondwe in Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Council, Bukonzo County West in Kasese district have revealed that they have started registering success ever since the fish market was relocated from the DRC side to the Ugandan side.

On June 05 this year, the fish market was shifted to the Ugandan side after it had been relocated to the DRC in 2020 during in which the country was battling the COVID- 19 pandemic.

Presenting their report during the Customs Regional Community Tax Baraza that was conducted by the Uganda Revenue Authority and held yesterday at Mpondwe One Stop Border Post, the Mpondwe Women Cross- border Group, acknowledged that ever since the market was relocated to the Ugandan side, they have been able to realize a boost in their businesses.

They therefore applauded Government of Uganda for her efforts in ensuring that the market is relocated to the Ugandan side and operate on the same days it used to be before it was shifted to the DRC side.

Agnes Birungi, the Secretary for Mpondwe Women Cross- border Group, described the market as the biggest source of revenue both to Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Council and the local population in the area.

Mr. Selevest Masereka Mapoze, the Mpondwe- Lhubiriha Town Council Chairperson, conquered with the traders and revealed that people’s livelihoods have been improved compared to the period when the market had been shifted to the DRC side.

Mr. Joel Kuka Mudumi, the acting URA Regional Manager in-charge of Western Uganda, urged the traders to jealously protect the fish market so that it is not again shifted to the DRC side.
