BY JOACKIM KULE MUHESI

A section of traders from Kasese District has decried the high taxes levied on their goods by government through the Uganda Revenue Authority.

The traders who deal in different forms of businesses made the remarks today afternoon during the launch of national wide consultative meetings organized by the Uganda National Traders’ Alliance that was held at Booma Grounds in Kasese Municipality.

The consultative meetings which will also be extended to the rest of the cities including Mbarara, Fort-Portal, Masaka, Gulu, Soroti, Mubende, Mbale, Kabale, Jinja and Kampala were launched with an aim of collecting data about the challenges facing the business industry in the entire country.

Mrs. Sarah Ithungu Masereka Baleke, who deals in events’ management services both in Kampala and Kasese, told the leadership of the alliance that the taxes levied on her imported goods from China are not favorable for the sustainability of her business.

Mr. Stanley Bwambale Pandas, the Chairperson for Mpondwe -Lhubiriha Export Zone Market in Bukonzo County West, said that the fish traders in the area were sometimes exploited due to the high taxes levied on their stocks.

He also revealed that the government had allegedly failed to sensitize the traders to acquire business skills and plans in order to have their businesses activities run smoothly.

The President of the Uganda National Traders’ Alliance, Mr. Godfrey Katongole responded to the traders that they were collecting data that they would use to write a report to the President for his perusal and scrutiny.

He advised the traders through their leadership to put their challenges and proposals in writing so that they are directly presented to the Head of State of State.
