Suspected ADF rebels kill two, burn trailer in Kasese

Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels have carried out another attack in the Western Uganda District of Kasese killing two people instantly and injuring two others.

The assailants are said to have torched a trailer registration number UDN 624L in which the four were travelling at Katholhu I Village, Katholhu Parish in Nyakiyumbu Sub County.

The deceased are Joseph Matovu, a resident of Kyengera- who was the driver and Claris Nzoghera, a resident of Nyakahya village in Karambi Sub county.

The injured are Alicen Magezi, a resident of Kinaba in Kisoro and Edreda Biira, a resident of Kikongo Cell in Rugendabara-Kikongo Town Council in Kasese district. They duo is undergoing treatment at Bwera Government General Hospital in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council.

Kurusumu Biira, a resident of Katholhu village at whose home the trailer was set ablaze said the assailants came in at around midnight and started hitting hard her gate.

Biira says all the nine people at her home remained quiet and then shortly after she heard the sound of a vehicle moving prompting the assailants to retreat.

A Messiah Radio journalist who was at the scene today morning was shown about six holes that Biira says were caused by the bullets from the assailants.

Margret Masika Kateba, another resident in Katholhu village said the mid night gunshots caused a lot of fear that most of them had sleepless nights.

Marcel Marusi, the chairperson for Katholhu trading centre says it is high time government considered re-arming the local defense units so that they supplement the security agencies.

Marusi said they have come to learn that the truck which was carrying onions was destined for the Customs Market at the Uganda-DRC border since Friday is always market days.

However, former Defense Minister Dr Chrispus Kiyonga who approached the scene today said the people do not need to worry but rather remain vigilant and give intelligence information to the security organs that are trained enough to handle the insurgents.

The former Bukonzo County West legislator also said the remnants of the ADF are making daring attacks because they have been brainwashed and indoctrinated.

The incident happens barely a week after the UPDF repulsed another attempted entry into Uganda at Nyabugando I Cell in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council. No injuries were registered although the Resident District Commissioner Lt Joe Walusimbi claimed that the assailants had taken with one of them who had been injured.

In June this year, suspected ADF rebels entered into the country and wreaked mayhem at Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Secondary School where 38 learners and seven community members were killed. About five other students were also abducted. ENDS
