South Rwenzori Diocese champions the fight against food shortage

BY MOUREEN BIIRA

In a bid to promote the food security campaign, South Rwenzori Diocese has distributed 200 more sacks of cassava stem cuttings to some churches and Christians to plant.

The donation which was given out last evening is an additional to over 300 sacks of cassava stem cuttings that were last year given to some churches to establish demonstration farms to champion the sustainability of cassava growing campaign in Kasese district.

The campaign aims at kicking out hunger, food scarcity and poverty from the communities by 2030.

While giving out the donation to the beneficiaries, the South Rwenzori Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Nason Baluku explained that the Diocese decided to prioritize cassava growing because of its associated benefits to the population.

The Prelate also reiterated that the program was non discriminative, adding that it should benefit everyone regardless of their religious affiliations.

Mr. Ronald Nguru, the Diocesan Agricultural Officer used the same opportunity to lecture the beneficiaries about the recommended agricultural practices including spacing while planting the donated cassava stem cuttings.

Some of the beneficiary Archdeaconries included St. Paul’s Deanery, Ibanda, Maliba, Rwesande, Kabatunda, Kasese, Mahango and Bwera among others.
