Religious leaders in Kasese district have been encouraged to use their sermons to preach against the violation of rights of both women and young children.
The encouragement was sounded today by Emmanuel Emwamu, the Western Regional Manager for the International Justice Mission (IJM) while addressing a section of religious leaders who had gathered at Better Living Centre for a half-day training.
Mr. Emwamu explained that since the religious leaders have a big following, they should use their respective platforms to fight against the common vices in families.
He used the same podium to ask the public to desist from using the negative cultural values and norms that deprive women and young children of their rights.
Rev. Ezra Mukonzo Yongeza, the Coordinator for the Inter-religious Council of Uganda in the Rwenzori Region noted that the church has a big role to do in the fight against violations of the rights of the children, women and men.
According to him, in some families, women have been forced to work all the day at the expense of other family members.
Joshua Baluku, an elder in the SDA Church, observed the need for some organizations to lobby for men who according to him are being oppressed at their homes and have not been listened to.
