Police in Kasese Launches Program to Tackle Rising Suicide Rates Among Students

Police in the Rwenzori East Policing region, Kasese district has resolved to sensitize the learners in their respective schools about the dangers of committing suicide, an act that is reportedly on an increase in the district.

The policing program that will include counselling and career guidance sessions is expected to begin tomorrow according to the Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime. The Police Mouthpiece revealed the programme today afternoon during his weekly press briefing that was held at Kasese Central Police Station in Kasese town.

Currently, the Rwenzori East Region faces a challenge of increasing cases of suicide especially among the school going children, with the most recent being the death of Barbara Kabugho, a senior two student at Bright Academy Secondary School, who ended her life early last week by poisoning.

Now, Tumushime says they will concentrate on sensitizing the school going children about the dangers of committing suicide and its impact to the community and government.

Commenting about the current security situation in the policing region, the Police Mouthpiece noted that it was normal.

He also told the press that Mr. Jimmy Masereka, RA214728 attached to the Armoured Brigade in Masaka and recently participated in an accident of attempted murder against a security guard at the district multipurpose hall has been remanded to Mubuku Government Prison.

The incident happened in the night of June 25, 2023.
