The Office of the Prime Minister has held discussions with the leaders from Kasese district aimed at forging proper and just means of resettling the flood victims encamped at Muhokya.

In May 2020, most rivers streaming from the Rwenzori Mountains including Nyamwamba, Lhubiriha, Mubuku, Nyamughasana and Sebwe burst their banks causing devastating floods that led to the displacement of more than 10,000 people.

The most affected communities from seventeen sub-counties as well as Nyamwamba and Bulembia Divisions in Kasese Municipality.

The victims were later taken to Muhokya for a temporary resettlement as government looks for land where to permanently resettle them.

Yesterday, the leaders from Kasese held discussions with the Minister of State for Relief, Disaster, Preparedness and Refugees, Hon. Lillian Aber at her office in Kampala.

The meeting was a follow-up of the Minister’s previous visit to Kasese district. On March 13, 2025, Hon. Lillian Aber visited Kasese district to ascertain the impact of disasters on the people and socio-economic development.

While interacting with the victims at Muhokya, the Minister was told that their living conditions were in a sorry state hence a need for an immediate resettlement.

In her response, Hon. Aber pledged to call for meeting of all the leaders from Kasese so that together they may forge a way forward.

The Kasese Resident District Commissioner, Lt. Joe Walusimbi who was among the leaders that attended the meeting told Messiah Radio today morning at his office in Kasese town that their discussions indicated a ray of hope that the flood victims would soon be resettled permanently. He, however, did not reveal the date on which they would be resettled.

He stressed that during the meeting, they also discovered that they were some irregularities in the procurement process of the land that government secured in Bwenanule on which to resettle the flood victims.

The irregularities according to him were between the seller of the land and the people who came from the Office of the Prime Minister to buy the said on behalf of government.

The RDC called upon the camp occupants to calmly wait, adding that the government was much concerned about their permanent resettlement.

Hon. Gideon Thembo Mujungu, the Member of Parliament for Busongora County South told Messiah Radio that during the meeting, they asked the Office of the Prime Minister to sort out the issues surrounding the land that was allegedly bought, in addition to giving out clear statements about the resettlement process.
