The Commander of Operation Shujaa, Maj. Gen Richard Otto has assured Ugandans and Congolese of the heightened security during the festive season, which includes Christmas and the New Year.
Speaking during a tour of Operation Shujaa’s area of operations, Maj Gen Otto reaffirmed the commitment of the joint Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) to ensuring the safety of citizens during and after the 2024/25 festive season. He noted that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) insurgents have been significantly weakened after three years of joint military efforts.
However, he warned that the group still poses a threat and called on citizens to remain vigilant. “The ADF is weakened, but this is the time for you to be more vigilant. The enemy may want to spoil our festive season with a terror attack, so be on the lookout,” Maj. Gen Otto urged.
Addressing troops in the field, Maj. Gen Otto emphasized the importance of maintaining round-the-clock vigilance. “Our enemies don’t have holidays, no weekends, no New Year celebrations. There is no way we are going to have holidays ourselves. We must protect the Wananchi so they can enjoy the festive period,” he said.
The commander commended the resilience and determination of the joint forces, which have restored peace in several areas under Operation Shujaa. He encouraged them to sustain their efforts to completely neutralize the ADF and bring lasting peace to the region.
Maj. Gen Otto also visited troops stationed in Katebei, Ndalya, Mambelenge, Otonaber, Mahala, Ndimo, and other locations under the joint forces’ control. ENDS
