BY ISAAC MUMBERE

Residents of Kayanja I village in Kitswamba Sub-county, Busongora County North in Kasese district were today morning treated with shock when they found one of their own having been killed by a stray elephant from Kibaale National Park.

Mr. Yofesi Katenene, the Kitswamba Sub-county Chairperson confirmed the development and identified the deceased as Emmanuel Kiiza, 34, a farmer in the area who used to specialize in rice growing.

Katenene, who regretted the incident, revealed that Kiiza was almost the 12th person to be attacked by stray elephants in a period of 2 years leaving 8 dead and 4 injured.

He lashed at the management of Uganda Wildlife Authority for its slow response to the calls by the local leaders demanding for an erection of an electric wire fense along the park boundaries.

Ms Bridget Mule, the Woman Councilor representing Kitswamba Parish, said it was regrettable for the community to lose 8 people in a spate of two years.

Mr. Yofesi Kyangu and a section of other residents expressed their disappointment with the Uganda Wildlife Authority for allegedly not minding about the lives of the residents.

An effort to get a comment from Uganda Wildlife Authority was futile by press time.
