Nyakiyumbu sub-county in Bukonzo County West, Kasese district is currently overwhelmed by high cases of child labour among the communities.
The children are either assigned heavy duties or used as security guards for the valuable property and projects while others are forced into early marriages.
Ms Patience Masika, the Community Development Officer for Nyakiyumbu Sub-county says they register more than 20 cases of child labour on a monthly basis.
According to her, the perpetrators of such cases are the parents and community members who lure the young ones to work in their projects.
Masika reveals that recently they committed to court a parent from Kyaminyawandi village who had deployed his nine – year –son in a vanilla garden to work as a security guard.
She attributes such a challenge to lack of civic education among the community members.
Masika has since observed need for the parents to embrace the idea of child spacing in an attempt to have manageable children.
She also calls for the intervention of civil society organizations in helping the children whose rights are infringed on by their parents and other community members.
