Local leaders in Kasese Municipality are pointing fingers at the Uganda Police Forces for the persistent menace of the notorious “Gaza boys” in the urban center.
These gangs have been terrorizing residents, especially in areas like Kizungu, Kitoro, and Mumbuzi, stealing property and even attacking people with knives and pangas.
The latest incident involved District Councillor Muzamiru Bisanga, who was attacked and robbed by a suspected Gaza group on New Year’s Day.
While some gang members have been arrested and taken to court, others have been released on police bond or bail, which has raised concerns among local leaders.
LCI chairpersons from various cells in the municipality blame the police for the continuous attacks citing the repeated release of gang members on bond or bail.
They argue that this has emboldened the Gaza boys, making them more resistant to authority.
The Kasese Municipality Mayor, Chance Kahindo, also expressed concerns about the impact of the Gaza group’s activities on the local economy, particularly the night economy.
He emphasized the need for the police and other security agencies to work together to address the issue.
The police, however, claim that they release suspects on bond because they have spent over 48 hours in custody without any charges being filed.
Nevertheless, local leaders are calling for a more effective approach to dealing with the Gaza group and ensuring the safety of residents. ENDS
