Levels of ignorance among parents worry leaders in Bulembia

BY XAVIER LINUS KULE

Mr. Abdul Magezi, the Community Development Officer for Bulembia Division in Kasese Municipality has revealed that the area might continue registering high cases of early marriages due to the alleged ignorance among the parents.

Mr. Magezi argues that most parents in the Division connive with men who defile their underage girl – children and secretly negotiate the case without the involvement of relevant authorities.

He is, however, hopeful that with the presence of some Nongovernmental Organizations like Girl Empowerment Foundation, the vice would be eradicated from the communities.

Magezi sounded the remarks today afternoon while addressing delegation from Girl Empowerment Foundation who were at Bulembia Division Offices in Katiri to deliver tailoring machines and salon equipment to the young mothers who are set to undergo a vocational skills’ training for six months.

Mr. Joshua Muhindo, the Executive Director at Girl Empowerment Foundation who handed 11 tailoring machines and 10 salon equipment to the beneficiaries, explained that the donation has been given to them under the project codenamed, “Preventing Early Child Unions,” that focuses on equipping the young mothers with skills as a means of improving their livelihoods.

In his remarks, Richard Bomera, the Bulembia Division Chairperson, hailed the donors for their kind support that would see the lives of young mothers positively changed.

Justine Muhindo Mutabazi, the Kasese Assistant RDC observed need for the parents in the area to restore some cultural practices that are aimed at protecting the girl-child as one way of fighting against cases of early marriages from the communities.
