Security operatives in Kasese district have directed the land victims encamped at the RDC’s office in Kasese town to vacate the area by tomorrow midday.

In May 21, this year, the victims started arriving at the RDC’s office, claiming that government had not expedited the process of resettling them on their various disputed pieces of land in the sub-counties of Kitswamba, Nyakiyumbu, Karusandara, Muhokya and Central Division of Kasese Municipality among others.

On June 11, the Minister of State for Lands, Hon. Dr. Sam Mayanja visited the district and requested the land victims to go back to their homes and wait for the government surveyors to do their work, process individual titles for government to officially hand over the disputed pieces of land to victims.

Today evening, a security committee chaired by the RDC met some of the affected persons and the press at the RDC’s office to brief them about yesterday’s resolutions from the security meeting.

Lt. Joe Walusimbi explained that having received complaints from the Municipal Authorities indicating that the health situation around the area had been worsened coupled with security threats, the committee resolved that the camp occupants should leave the place between today and tomorrow by midday.

He also argued that they discovered that the construction works of some major infrastructures had stalled following the victims’ stay in the camp.

He subsequently directed the police to takeover the control of the camp and ensure that the victims are out because their concerns were heard and are being worked upon.

However, the security meeting’s resolutions did not go well with the representatives of the land victims who attended the briefing.
