Kasese residents reminded to be vigilant of the anticipated future disasters

Members of the Sub-county Disaster Management Committees in Kasese district have been asked to fulfill the role of sensitizing the residents in their respective areas of jurisdiction about the need to be vigilant of the anticipated disasters during the current rainy season.

The remarks were sounded by Mr. Mustafa Kikusa, the Kasese District Principal Assistant Secretary attached to the Chief Administrative Officer’s office while officiating at the opening session of a two- day orientation meeting of the Sub-county Disaster Management Committee members.

The meeting that started today and will end tomorrow is being held at Gena Leisure Gardens in Saluti A cell, Kanyangeya Ward in Nyamwamba Division of Kasese Municipality with the participants drawn from the sub-counties of Kyondo, Bugoye and Kyarumba.

The three selected sub-counties were among those which were severely hit by the recent flood and landslide disasters that befell the district leaving at least 13 people dead.

Mr. Kikusa told the participants including Sub-county Chairpersons, Chiefs, GISOs and Councilors this would be the right time for them to lecture the residents on what they ought to do ahead of the anticipated disasters so as to curtail them from causing havoc in the communities.

He also observed need for the participants to sensitize the population about the need to plant some tree species that are resistant to floods.

Mr. Joseph Singoma, the Kasese District Senior Planner who doubles as the Disaster Focal Person told the meeting that the circular from the Uganda National Metrological Authority (UNMA) indicates that the district might receive normal rains associated with mudslides within this month. 

Mr. Jackson Baluku Mughuruka, the Kyarumba Sub County Chairperson who was among the participants told our reporter he would apply the knowledge acquired from the orientation meeting to sensitize the residents about what they must do in an attempt to prevent a repeat of what happened to the sub-county in the last months.
