Kasese Municipal leaders have been encouraged to sensitize the slum dwellers (residents) to embrace the culture of forming SACCOs so that they are enabled to be helped by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development under the Housing Project.
The encouragement was sounded yesterday afternoon by Ms Rosemary Mukite Mukhwana, the Principal Housing Officer who represented the Commissioner for the Housing department during a one- day training of the Municipal leaders on how to integrate the slum dwellers into the Housing Project.
The Principal Housing Officer explained that the project is an initiative that brings about new structural settlements to the people staying in slum areas in the urban centres.
According to her, such an initiative has already benefited some other slum dwellers in places of Kampala, Mbarara and other urban towns in the country, appealing to the residents of Kasese Municipality to subscribe to the government’s programme.
In his remarks, Mr. Ham Natuhwera, the Kasese District Vice Chairperson, hailed the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development for selecting Kasese Municipality to be among the beneficiaries of the project. He was optimistic that if well implemented, the initiative would change the lives of people staying in slum areas.
He called on the Municipal leaders to jealously welcome the idea and urged them to sensitize the community members about the project that is non political and only focuses on development.
