BY XAVIER LINUS KULE

Local authorities from Kithoma – Kanyatsi Town Council in Bukonzo County West, Kasese district have initiated a campaign that is aimed at addressing the challenge of absenteeism among the school going children.

Yesterday, the local leaders and police carried out a joint operation that left over 20 children of school going age who were found in Kithoma market and their respective homes arrested.

Mr. Milton Kule Mbwarara, the Town Council Chairperson told our reporter in an exclusive interview that the campaign was specifically launched to address the increasing rate of absenteeism among the pupils in the area.

He, however, observed that that many of the school going children were not attending classes due to lack of essential scholastic materials such as books and uniforms coupled with the pressure from the parents who force them to stay at home and protect the family property from thieves.

Because of its proximity with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kithoma – Kanyatsi Town Council faces unique challenges where parents engage in some agricultural activities across the border, leaving their children unsupervised.
