BY JOACKIM KULE

Kasese District Disaster Management Committee has released a report detailing the magnitude and impact of the recent floods that affected the residents in some parts of the district.

Last week, major rivers streaming from the Rwenzori Mountains including Nyamwamba Nyamughasana and Lhubiriha burst their banks leading to loss of property, crop gardens and claiming the life of one person.

While releasing the report to the press on Monday at his office, Mr. Joseph Isingoma, the Kasese District Senior Planner, who also doubles as the Secretary to the Disaster Management Committee, indicated that the recent floods claimed the life of one person in Maliba Sub-county, destroyed 25 acres of food crops and also affected 40 households with a population of 200 people in the area.

He also revealed that at least 60 households from Karusandara sub-county were displaced and the victims are currently encamped at Kabukero Church of Uganda as they wait for their affected pieces of land to be dry.

The same reported indicated that 66 households from the seven villages in Bulembia and Central Divisions of Kasese Municipality got filled up with water and debris.

However, Mr. Isingoma noted that the affected persons were advised to remove debris from their houses and re-occupy them as the situation normalizes.

Mr. Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi, the District Chairperson stressed that following the incident, they requested government to procure a D10 machine that would be used to carry out frequent de-silting of the rivers to curtail further flooding.
