Kasese at risk for being hit by Foot and Mouth Disease

BY XAVIER LINUS KULE

The Kasese District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Yusuf Kibaya has revealed that the district is at a high risk of being hit by the Foot and Mouth Disease.

Dr. Kibaya says such a disease is likely to be imported from the cows and other animals that are transported to Kasese from the neighbouring districts.

He made the revelation today morning while speaking to our reporter in an exclusive interview at his office in Rukooki.

According to him, at least 10 trucks carrying cows are always ferried in at Mpondwe border per market day and subsequently transported to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He also stressed that buffaloes from the neighbouring National Parks might pose a threat to the people’s animals since they sometimes trek long distances looking for pasture near the community land.

Dr. Kibaya has since discouraged traders from the practice of ferrying in infected animals from other districts as one way of preventing the disease from penetrating the district.

He also observed need for the farmers to establish paddocks in an attempt to avoid unnecessary movements of animals.
