Apple Growers in Kasese district are still finding it hard to get reliable market for their cash crop, Messiah Radio has learnt.
Mr. John Kimadi, the Chairperson for Kasese Apple Growers’ Organization (KAGO) says despite the farmers embracing the production of the cash crop, they struggle to get market for their harvested fruits.
According to him, most farmers do not have the capacity to get connected to the national and international buyers and in the process end up selling the harvested fruits to the local population at cheaper prices.
He appeals to the government to support the farmers and also look for a food market of their harvested fruits so that they are encouraged to grow more of the apples to enhance their livelihoods.
He also observes need for the government to support the farmers with the equipment that would help them add value through processing juice and other products from the cash crop.
He calls on government to employ special Agricultral Extension Workers purposely to guide the people on how best they can plant the crop so that it yields heavily.
