The Government of Uganda has introduced Kiswahili Language in primary schools with Kasese being among the first three pilot districts to implement the programme with effect from the first school term next year.
Others include Kabarole and Fort Portal Tourism City.
Kiswahili is the most widely studied indigenous language in Africa. The national language of both Kenya and Tanzania, it is spoken as a native language all along the east coast of Africa from Southern Somalia in the north down through the Kenyan and Tanzanian coasts.
The Kasese District Acting Senior Inspector of Schools, Mr. Erisania Kule says some primary school teachers from the district have been taken for training about the teaching of Kiswahili.
He explains that the teaching of Kiswahili will begin from primary four so that by the time they complete primary seven, the learners should be able to communicate and write it fluently.
Kule is happy that once the language is taught effectively, the learners would be able to communicate to the people from other East African countries under the umbrella body, the East African Community.
He appeals to the parents to accord maximum support to their children so that they learn Kiswahili and acquire skills in both writing and speaking.
