Government in final stages of resettling the Muhokya flood victims in Kasese district

The Office of the Prime Minister has revealed that it is now ready to resettle the flood victims encamped at Muhokya temporarily established camp on the 200 acres of land it allegedly purchased in Bwenanule Cell in Muhokya Town Council.

In 2020, some major rivers streaming from the Rwenzori Mountains burst their banks causing devastating floods that displaced a section of people from their homes in addition to destroying an assortment of crop gardens.

Later, the displaced persons were temporarily housed in a camp at Muhokya where they are still living.

After some time, the government through Office of the Prime Minister revealed that it had bought land in Bwenanule Cell on which to resettle the victims but the said piece of land was contested in the courts of law by the community members who claimed its ownership.

Addressing the press today afternoon at Virina Gardens in Kasese town, Dr. Davis Mwenyi, the Commissioner for Disaster and Preparedness in the Office of the Prime Minister, revealed that government was now ready to take the 163 households encamped at Muhokya to the said land, after consulting the office of the IGG and the Ministry of Lands that indicated that the said piece of land was bought from a genuine owner.

Responding to the issue of the said piece of land being in courts of law, Dr. Mwenyi stressed that on Wednesday next week, the Office of the Prime Minister will open an Inquiry Desk in Bwenanule to listen to all people with complaints so that they direct them to follow the proper channels of reporting their complaints for redress. 

He sounded a stern warning to the politicians to desist from politicizing the government efforts towards resettling the flood victims on the piece of land secured by the Office of the Prime Minister.

The Kasese Resident District Commissioner, Lt. Joe Walusimbi asked the community members to remain peaceful as government handles the issue of resettling the flood victims.
