Government asked to sensitize the people about urban farming

BY OBED KULE KITHENDE KIBAYA SIBAMINYA

A concerned farmer group in Kasese Municipality has suggested to government to sensitize the people living in urban areas about the importance of practicing urban farming as one way fighting against the challenge of food insecurity.

The suggestion was made by the members of Kidodo United Farmers’ Group located in the Central Division. The group is currently embracing urban farming using improved methods like the use of sacks to grow vegetables in their small plots of land.

Ms Nerveless Biira, the Group secretary sounded the remarks today morning while presenting a report to some officials from Team Leonard Imanishimwe that had paid a courtesy visit to the members.

Biira also revealed that the 350 members have also embraced a poultry and piggery project that has helped them enhance their incomes and pay their children’s school fees.

She also noted that they have poultry and piggery to enhance their economy which she said helps them to take their children to schools.

According to them, they wish to benefit from Rwenzori-Luweero triangle program to double their efforts in agriculture.

Kezia Ithungu, an association’s member testified that ever since they started modern urban agriculture, their expenditure on buying greens and other vegetables have been reduced.

Mr. Oniz Kapampa, another member, who hailed Mr. Imanishimwe for the continued support to some organized groups, asked for seeds for the farmers to plant this season.

Responding to the farmers’ concerns, Mr. Neckson Thaheramboko, who represented Mr. Leonard Imanishimwe, noted that they requested for shillings 30 million from Rwenzori –Luweero Triangle to benefit Kidodo United Farmers’ Group.

He subsequently handed the members shillings 600,000 to help then pay house rent for their office so that they are officially established on ground.
