Members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Kasese district have organized another charity walk aimed at collecting food and non-food items from the public and subsequently donate them to land victims currently encamped at the RDC’s office in Kasese town.
The same opposition political party members on May 29, this year organized a similar initiative but were blocked by police from delivering the collected food stuffs to the people in the camp.
Addressing the press today afternoon, the Kasese District FDC Chairperson, Mr. Ronald Bwambale Kabuku, noted that they had formerly informed police about their planned activity slated for Thursday, August 28.
In his letter dated today and addressed to the Rwenzori East Regional Police Commander, Kabuku quotes the constitution of the Republic of Uganda, Article 29 which guarantees the right to freedom from hunger and access to basic necessities.
Kabuku also quotes the Uganda Human Rights Commission’s emphasis onthe protection of human dignity and access to essential needs. By collecting food items, Kabuku alleges that they will do so to prevent the land victims from starvation.
Asked whether they received a letter from FDC, the Rwenzori East Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime acknowledged its receipt.
He, however, revealed that they won’t allow the FDC members to go ahead with their planned activity, arguing that they had not been cleared by the Inspector General of Police.
