Over eight people from Kidodo cell in the Central Division of Kasese Municipality are counting losses following the invasion of elephants from the Queen Elizabeth National Park into their crop gardens.
According to the area Local Council I Chairperson, Mr. Geoffrey Sharif Masereka, ever since this week started, elephants have been invading the area, destroying people’s crops.
Masereka however assured the residents that the local leadership was working closely with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to expedite the process of erecting an electric wire fense around the protected area.
Ms. Jenifer Nyakato, one of the residents who whose tomato garden was greatly affected told the press that the she was anticipating to have lost crops worth shillings 2 million.
She asked UWA to expedite the process of compensating farmers who have already lost their crops and property the wild beasts.
Hon. Jimmy Kamusitho, the Councilor representing Kikonzo Cell to the Central Division called for a quicker response from the UWA so that the animals are curtailed from crossing to the community land.
