The Electoral Commission – Kasese branch has revealed that there are seven political and electoral vacancies that need to be filled.
Mr. Ismail Atwijukire Takih, the Returning Officer for Kasese Electoral District says his office has received information from the office of the Chief Administrative Officer declaring the seven vacancies.
He mentions some of the vacant positions including the District Councilor representing Kitabu sub-county, Municipal Woman Councilor representing Kihara and Rukooki wards in Nyamwamba Division, Sub-county Woman Councilor representing Mweya Parish in Lake Katwe Sub-county and Sub-county Woman Councilor representing Persons with Disabilities in Bulembia Division.
Others are Sub-county Woman Councilor representing Ibimbo parish in Kyondo Sub-county, Sub-county Woman Councilor representing Bwenanule ward in Muhokya Town Council and Sub-county Female Councilor representing the Elderly in Lake Katwe Sub-county.
Atwijukire clearly states that the Electoral areas and positions were declared vacant after the elected leaders resigned from their positions while others died as others changed the areas of residence.
For the case of the District Councilor representing Buhuhira Sub-county, Atwijukire says he has not yet received any official communication from the Chief Administrative Officer about the fate of Mr. Obed Tsotswana.
But Messiah Radio is reliably informed that Mr. Tsotswana, the former District Council Speaker and Councilor representing Buhuhira Sub-county secured a government job as a lecturer at Mountains of the Moon University in Fort-portal City.
Atwijukire stresses that his office is ready to conduct fresh elections in the affected areas and fill the vacant positions as soon as government releases the funds to carry out the exercise.
According to the Returning Officer, the Electoral Commission has already embarked on a number Of activities in preparation for 2026 General Elections including approval of the National Development Plan which will soon be launched by the National Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi.
About the fate of the Local Council I Chairperson for Kidodo Cell in the Central Division of Kasese Municipality, Atwijukire says his office has also not yet received official communication from the Municipal Town Clerk declaring Kidodo vacant.
But he adds that once he receives the information, he will coordinate with the relevant authorities and conduct fresh elections.
His comment follows the remarks made by the Chairperson Local Council III for the Central Division, Mr. Safari Martin asking the Electoral Commission- Kasese branch to expedite the process of conducting a by-election for the position of the L. C I Chairperson for Kidodo Cell, arguing that one Geoffrey Sharif Masereka has refused to hand over the office stamp despite the alleged pronouncement by Court.
However, Messiah Radio has not yet independently verified Safari’s claims.
