Dr. Kiyonga reminds coffee farmers about good farming practices

BY MATHIUS KAHUNGU

Coffee farmers from Bukonzo County West in Kasese district have been reminded about the need to ensure proper care and maintenance of their plantations in an attempt to earn a living from them.

The reminder was sounded last evening by Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, the NRM candidate for the position of constituency Member of Parliament who was addressing his supporters at Kyabayora Trading Centre in Muhindi Village of Nyakiyumbu Sub-county and Rusese Baptist Church in Mpondwe- Lhubiriha Town Council respectively.

Dr. Kiyonga, who is a farmer himself, advised the residents to always seek the services of Agricultural Extension Workers and properly maintain their coffee plantations in order to realize increased crop yields and profits.

The Makerere University Chancellor also tipped the farmers whose plantations are not doing well to embrace the growing of Robusta coffee which according to him has proved to be more productive than the indigenous Arabica coffee.

The former Défense Minister underscored the need for the farmers to supplement crop production with small scale animal rearing projects like goat keeping and pig rearing in order to enhance household incomes and family diet.
