A section of leaders from the communities neighbouring the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasese Municipality has applauded the government for her continuous disbursement of funds given to the communities in form of revenue sharing from the park.
The leaders say such funds have boosted community projects and activities.
The leaders mostly from Kirembe and Kahokya Cells in the Central Division sounded their appreciation to the government yesterday afternoon during a function in which they were receiving an assortment of catering items that were procured from the money disbursed to them by UWA using the revenue sharing funds.
Sanasio Kule Mubako, the Chairperson L.CI for Kahokya Cell in appreciation, observed the need for the residents to co-exist and live in harmony with the wild animals for their associated benefits.
The Kirembe Ward NRM Chairperson, Erisa Baluku Musungu was happy that the people who live near the National Park are also considered to benefit from the money that government generates from protected areas.
Martin Safari, the Central Division Chairperson explained that after receiving shillings 12 million from UWA in the 2023/2024 financial year, they decided to buy seats and catering items at a tune of shillings 4 million while shillings 8 million was used to construct an administration block to cater for the Local Council I and II offices of Kirembe Ward.
Mr. Safari stressed that it was not only Kirembe Ward that received the UWA funds, adding that Railway and Kamaiba Wards were among the beneficiaries.
