Coffee farmers in Kasese challenged to go by the demands of the Western consumers

BY MATHIUS KAHUNGU

Coffee farmers in Kasese have been challenged to adhere to the demands of the western consumers as means of favourably competing with other large-scale producers of the cash crop.

The challenge was sounded on Wednesday by Mr. Wilson Baluku Kabebe from the Uganda Coffee Farmers’ Alliance (UCFA), a Cooperative Society that deals in the production, buying and exporting coffee.

Mr. Kabebe disclosed that European coffee consumers have come up with some policies which they want farmers to adhere to including planting of trees to provide canopy to coffee plants, imploring the farmers to conform to them to such policies so that the coffee quality is maintained and hence secure better prices on the World Market.

He also cautioned the public against the act of burning plastics, arguing that the act in turn leads to the production of toxic gases that destroy the ozone layer and cause global warming.

He further called upon the farmers to revive the formation of cooperatives which he described as key in marketing their produce.

Kabebe asked the farmers to adopt and embrace modern technology for use as an alternative channel to link them to their clients.
