Climate Change is a double blow to People Living with Disabilities in Kasese

BY JOEL KAGUTA

People living with disabilities in Kasese district have reported that climate change has negatively affected their lives.

Augustine Bwambale, a person living with disability who hails from Mpumuru I cell in Maliba Town Council says that their lives are always at stake during disasters. Bwambale explains that when the district was hit by floods, many of his colleagues in some areas that were mostly hit were forgotten at their respective homes as the relatives were running for their lives.

Bwambale who also doubles as the Maliba Town Council Chairperson for people living with disabilities notes that their lives are going to be rough should the current food crisis persist across the district.

His comment comes at the time when Friends of Stacy Children’s Initiative, a non-government organization based in Kasese has launched a project to respond to the cases of gender-based violence.

The three month project will be implemented in the current month, July and August in the sub-counties of Maliba, Bugoye, Karusandara and Kasese Municipality.

Patrick Kule, a Chaplain and Counselor at Friends of Stacy Children’s Initiative offices, located at Kamaiba ward, explains that Gender Based Violence retards development.  Kule says that the project has already started with the training of local leadership structures of disabled women, girls and local leaders to help the organization contribute to the fight against Gender Based Violence.

Patience Masikella, an Advocate with Justice Centers Uganda, Kasese branch urges the parents to always report cases of Gender Based Violence.
