The Kasese District Veterinary Office has revealed that it is investigating issues surrounding an outbreak of African swine fever among the pigs across the district.
African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, whose mortality rate can reach 100%.
Dr. Yusuf Kibaya, the Kasese District Veterinary Officer says following the outbreak, the farmers should be vigilant and join hands in fighting the disease.
He is skeptical that once the disease spreads rapidly, very many farmers will lose their pigs from their respective farms and also be forced to sell them at cheaper prices, hence making them ineligible to meet their financial targets.
He has since advised the farmers to implement some preventive measures including maintaining sanitation and hygiene, using clean drinking water, enforcing quarantine and controlling the influx of goods and visitors.
On a closely related development, Dr. Kibaya says poultry farmers are currently battling with a challenge of their birds having wounds in the eyes.
