A total of 612 people remain stranded at an internally displaced persons camp at Kiribigha Roman Catholic Church in Kyarumba sub-county, Bukonzo county East in Kasese district.
The victims from 117 households were forced to flee their homes after a heavy down pour last month left their houses destroyed.
Lots of properties and crops were also destroyed in the areas of Buthale, Kalonge, Kaghema and Kanyatsi by floods and mudslides that followed the heavy rains on April 23.
According to the Camp Chairperson, Janackson Bwambale Manyonyi, the encamped persons either had their houses completely destroyed or their gardens overly ravaged.
Bwambale adds that the camp continues to grapple with several challenges including poor shelter, poor sanitation and an acute lack of food.
Former Bukonzo East Parliamentary candidate Dr Rude Julius Bwambale who had paid a courtesy visit to the camp asked the camp lead to compile a comprehensive so that he takes it to relevant offices and narrate their plight.
Dr Rude late proceeded to Mahango sub-county to visit families which were also heavily affected by the floods and mudslides. At Mahango, Gideon Kakusi LCI chairperson for Matere Village reiterated that villages of Matere, Kyambarwa, Nyamisule, Lhuhiri and Kyabwenge have suffered firsthand the effects of heavy rains.
Dr. Rude, who donated one million Uganda shillings to the encamped persons at Kibirigha Catholic church and at Mahango sub county headquarters, emphasised the need for tree planting to mitigate the effects of climate change in Kasese.
