Police declines to permit FDC’s peaceful demonstration

The police in the Rwenzori East policing region (Kasese district) have declined to grant permission to FDC members to carry out their planned peaceful demonstration over the district leaders’ alleged failure to rehabilitate the multipurpose building located in Nyamwamba Division of Kasese Municipality.

The FDC members had planned to walk to the district headquarters tomorrow September 12 due to the alleged failure by the district leadership to safeguard the multipurpose hall from vandalism and subsequently resorting to hiring a private hotel to accommodate council sittings hence leading to misuse of taxpayers’ money.

The opposition members also argued that the district leadership had failed to end issues of corruption reported in the District Service Commission.

Addressing the press this evening at Virina Gardens in Kasese town, SP Luke Mbusa, the Rwenzori East Regional Community Liaisons Officer stressed that they wouldn’t allow any person to demonstrate because their request has not been cleared by the Inspector General of Police.

SP Mbusa thus directed all the Divisional Commanders of Hima, Katwe, Bwera and Kasese to arrest whoever would be involved in such an unlawful demonstration and slap charges on them accordingly.

However, Mr. Ronald Bwambale Kabuku, the Kasese District FDC Chairperson had earlier told the press that after holding an online meeting of the party members, they resolved to temporarily halt the demonstration.

According to Mr. Kabuku, one of the reasons why they halted the demonstration was the write up which was sent to them by the Clerk to Council of the District indicating that tomorrow’s council sitting wouldn’t be held from a hotel.

Last Friday, the Kasese Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Elias Byamungu told our reporter that he would also not authorize any further payments of money to the hotel owner, arguing that the district has many public places that are solely owned by the Government of Uganda.

He, on the other hand, revealed that they had budgeted for the renovation works of the multipurpose building in their running budget.
