Kasese DEO warns head teachers against denying learners chance to participate in co-curricular activities

BY ZALIMON BASIGHALHA (GOOD LUCK)

The Kasese District Education Officer has vowed to deal with Primary and Secondary School Head teachers who deliberately deny the learners chance to participate in some co-curricular activities.

Mr. Ernest Bwambale Thabugha says it has become a habit by many School Head teachers even when co-curricular activities are indicated on the Ministry of Education and Sports Calendar.

According to him, any school that will not participate in football, netball, athletics, music, dance and drama and scouting will have its Head teacher penalized.

He sounded the remarks over the weekend while addressing 177 learners from both primary and secondary schools in Busongora County who had camped at Hima Primary School in Hima Town Council for a five – day Kasese District Scouts Inter-patrol Training and Competitions.

The training was organized under the theme, “Sanitation and Water Conservation is my responsibility as a Scout.”

During the training that ended yesterday, the participants successfully underwent campsite organization and development, menstrual hygiene and management (making re-usable sanitary pads), pioneering, ICT, community service, parade and drills and presentations on sanitation and water conservation.

Mr. Thabugha discouraged the Heads of Institutions from both government grant –aided and privately owned institutions from only focusing on academics but also embrace co-curricular activities as way of refreshing the learners ‘minds as well as developing their talents.
