Two of the three suspects accused of allegedly stealing 900 kilograms of processed coffee worth shillings 27 million from the stores of Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Union have been further remanded to Mubuku Government Prison.
It is alleged that the suspects including Enos Muhindo, a Gatekeeper, Cosmus Kule, a boda-boda rider and Fred Mandefu, a master key expert broke into the stores of Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Union in Kyarumba Town Council, Bukonzo County East in Kasese district and ran away with the said kilograms of coffee.
After their arrest, they were transferred to Kasese Central Police Station and later arraigned in court where they were subsequently remanded to Mubuku Government Prison.
Today morning, the trio reappeared before court presided over by His Worship, Allan Nyakaana, the Principal Grade One Magistrate and through their Defense Lawyer, Adolf Masereka, they requested for more time to evidence filed by witnesses against them.
The Magistrate did not have any objection to their request and further remanded two of the suspects to Mubuku Government Prison who are expected to reappear in court on May 22 for the hearing of the cases slapped against them.
However, Fred Mandefu, one of the suspects presented his substantial sureties and was given cash bail of shillings 2 million while the sureties where each given a non cash bail of shillings 9 million.
Speaking to the press shortly after the court session, Counsel Geoffrey Mishele, the Prosecution Lawyer from Bagenda and Co. Advocates who is representing Bukonzo Joint Cooperative Union said he was happy with the court decision of giving bail to one of the suspects, adding that every inmate has a right to be given bail as long as they have presented substantial sureties.
